Agricultural Marketing Department started its functioning independently following the Notification No. 6420/MW&C/AM/O/9M-29/2011 dated 31.10.2011.
Before that it was functioning as one of the wing of Agriculture Department with the name MW&C Branch. It plays an important role in keeping up a competitive market of Agricultural produces.
The main objectives of the Department are:To minimize post-harvest losses and prevention of distress sale by the farmers/producers.
Maintenance and development of markets through Regulated Market Committees. This Department acts under purview of The West Bengal Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Act, 1972
and The West Bengal Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Rules, 1982. The West Bengal Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Act, 1972 has been amended as
West Bengal Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation)(Amendment) Act, 2014 with an eye for direct marketing between producer and buyer,construction of new markets, setting up of terminal markets, construction/ development/
extension of market link roads, issuance of license of new markets, creation of more employment opportunities drawing greater investment, increasing prices of agricultural produces at producers level etc. Besides this,different infrastructural
works are undertaken like construction of Krishak Bazars etc. in the different Districts of State by the West Bengal State Agricultural Marketing Board (WBSAMB). This Department works under demand No. 4 of the State budget.
